Lagos Expands Public Toilets to Combat Open Defecation

The Lagos State Government, led by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, is implementing a significant sanitation reform by installing 1,700 public toilets across the state. This initiative aims to end open defecation, which has been exacerbated by inadequate sanitation infrastructure and limited access to clean water.

The reform is part of a broader climate resilience framework that links sanitation and wastewater management to urban planning and climate adaptation goals. The project addresses public health crises, particularly the spread of diseases like cholera and diarrhea, which disproportionately affect vulnerable populations such as children and women.

The new toilets will also integrate solar power to reduce emissions and ensure functionality. This comprehensive approach reflects a shift in how sanitation is viewed, moving beyond a mere social service to a critical component of climate infrastructure, aiming to create healthier, more resilient urban environments in Lagos.
