Lagos School Wins N2.5 Million Chess Championship

Platform School, located in Ipaja, Lagos, clinched the title at the 2026 Ecobank National School Team Chess Championship in the secondary school category, winning a prize of N2.5 million. The tournament attracted 1,500 students from approximately 300 schools nationwide.

Dayspring School finished second, receiving N2 million, while King's College, Lagos, placed third with a prize of N1.5 million. The chess team, comprised of students from underserved backgrounds in the Makoko community, showcased their talent and hard work, which was described as a product of sustained dedication and strategic practice.

Mr. Bola Ob, the founder of Platform School, stated that the victory reflects a deliberate investment in intellectual development and critical thinking. Mr. Adeyinka Adewol, Vice President of the Nigeria Chess Federation, noted the country's progress towards producing its first grandmaster, with the player rating rising from 2,290 to 2,359.
