Lagos State Expands Medical College Capacity to 2,500

The Lagos State Government is set to increase the annual student intake of the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM) from approximately 500 to 2,500 by 2028. To facilitate this expansion, the former CACOVID Centre at Mainland Hospital in Yaba will be repurposed as additional teaching space for LASUCOM.
This initiative aligns with the government's goal to transform LASUCOM into a full-fledged University of Medicine and Health Sciences. The Lagos State Infrastructure Asset Management Agency identified the CACOVID facility as an under-utilized public asset suitable for conversion.
The renovation and expansion were approved in December 2024, with PCP Construction Nigeria Limited appointed as the contractor. Work commenced in March 2025, encompassing various construction activities.
The facility was officially handed over to the Ministry of Health and LASUCOM for optimal use. Commissioner for Health Akin Abayomi emphasized that this project aims to expand the capacity to train healthcare professionals amid the ongoing challenge of medical personnel migration.
The Provost of LASUCOM, Olufemi Idowu, and other officials were present at the handover.
