Lagos Technicians Push for Solar Skills Development Framework

Generator and solar energy technicians in Lagos convened at a Solar Technicians Town Hall on [date not specified] at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry to advocate for a coordinated framework supporting the transition from traditional generator-based livelihoods to the solar energy sector. This event is part of a four-month action research project led by researchers from ODI Global, African Cities Research Consortium, and De Montfort University, with support from the University of Lagos and the Federation of Informal Workers Organisations of Nigeria.

The forum gathered informal energy workers, solar technicians, and researchers to discuss the challenges and opportunities in Nigeria's evolving energy landscape. Participants identified barriers such as fragmented training pathways, lack of recognized certification, and financing constraints that hinder the transition.

The research team conducted a rapid labor-market assessment involving over 300 technicians to evaluate their backgrounds and training needs. A final stakeholder convening is scheduled for later in the month to further assess the quality of skills-acquisition pathways and the demand for solar skills.
