Lagos State to Charge for Street Parking Starting 2026

Lagos State will begin charging motorists for street parking in 2026, as announced by Adebisi Adelabu, the General Manager of the Lagos State Parking Authority (LASPA). This initiative was disclosed during a briefing with Akeem Dauda, the Chairman of Ikeja Local Government Area, and aims to address the chronic traffic congestion caused by indiscriminate roadside parking.

The pilot scheme will commence in selected local government areas, including Ikeja, and is designed to bring order to parking, enhance traffic flow, and create job opportunities for residents in the designated areas. Adelabu clarified that LASPA's mandate includes managing parking across all 57 local government areas in Lagos State.

The initiative is expected to significantly improve urban mobility in Africa's largest city, which has been plagued by chaotic roadside parking, particularly in high-traffic commercial districts like Ikeja and Surulere. The scheme is seen as a crucial step towards sustainable urban management.
