Lagos State to Launch State-Issued Driver's License

The Lagos State Government announced plans to introduce a state-issued driver’s license in collaboration with the federal government, as disclosed by the Commissioner for Transport, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, during a press briefing on Monday. This initiative, expected to launch in 2025, will provide motorists with the option to obtain either the existing federal driver’s license or the new Lagos state-issued license once the scheme becomes operational.

The move is designed to promote better compliance with traffic regulations and improve safety standards while streamlining the licensing process for motorists. Osiyemi noted that a total of 56,876 driver’s licenses were processed during a recent review period, which included 27,067 fresh applications and 29,810 renewals, handled in collaboration with the Motor Vehicle Administration Agency and the Federal Road Safety Corps.

Additionally, 1,158 international driver permits were issued during this period. The briefing also covered updates on the Lagos Blue Line rail transport project, which aims to serve 3.5 million passengers by 2025.
