Lagos Fire Caused by Prepaid Meter Power Surge

A fire incident occurred on June 19, 2023, at 6:31 AM in a three-storey residential building located at No. 11 Ademola Taiwo Street, Ketu Ikosi, Lagos. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) attributed the fire to an electrical surge from a prepaid meter situated at the front section of the building.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service responded swiftly to the incident, with the Tiger Squad observing that the fire had engulfed the topmost floor of the building. Firefighting operations commenced immediately to contain the blaze and prevent its spread to adjacent properties.

Preliminary investigations confirmed the cause of the fire as an electrical surge. During the firefighting efforts, two personnel from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service collapsed and were evacuated to a trauma center for medical attention.

Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported among civilians. LASEMA urged residents to regularly inspect and maintain their electrical installations to prevent similar incidents.
