LASU's N200M Monthly Electricity Cost Sparks Infrastructure Plans

Lagos State University (LASU) incurs over N200 million monthly on electricity, as disclosed by Tolani Sule during the TETFund Public-Private Partnership (PPP) student hostel project ceremony. The university faces challenges from unstable grid supply and heavy reliance on diesel generators.

The financial pressure affects funding for academic infrastructure improvements. Dr.

Tunji Alausa, the Minister of Education, emphasized the government's commitment to enhancing educational infrastructure and student welfare. The federal government plans to invest in an independent power plant to stabilize electricity supply, which is crucial for academic activities.

Additionally, a 1,500-bed hostel project will be funded through a PPP involving TETFund and private investors, featuring modern amenities to enhance student comfort. The federal government has allocated N100 billion for hostel construction across 50 institutions and N96 billion for similar interventions, totaling N200 billion for student accommodation projects.

These initiatives are part of a broader strategy to improve the tertiary education system in Nigeria.
