LAWMA to Arrest Buyers of Goods from Roadside Traders

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), led by Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer Muyiwa Gbadegesin, has issued a warning regarding the arrest and prosecution of individuals who buy goods from illegal roadside traders. This enforcement initiative will commence next week and is part of a broader strategy to combat illegal trading, indiscriminate waste disposal, and obstruction of public infrastructure in Lagos.

Gbadegesin stated that under Section 151, subsection 2 of the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law 2017, it is an offense to purchase goods from prohibited locations. Offenders may face a fine of ₦90,000, six months’ imprisonment, or both.

The LAWMA chief emphasized that illegal roadside markets contribute to waste issues that obstruct drainage and create public health risks. He urged buyers to recognize their role in perpetuating this problem and highlighted that LAWMA is also enhancing waste collection services in areas previously cleared of illegal dumping.
