LAWMA Seals Shops in Lagos for Waste Disposal Violations

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) conducted an operation on Sunday, sealing several shops along the Tejuosho-Ojuelegba corridor for indiscriminate waste disposal. This enforcement action involved LAWMA's Waste Investigation, Surveillance and Enforcement (WISE) team, alongside officials from the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (KAI), OP MESA personnel, and the Nigeria Police.

The operation targeted businesses that had been repeatedly warned about dumping refuse on road medians. LAWMA has intensified its enforcement of environmental sanitation laws to improve cleanliness, prevent flooding from blocked drainage channels, and enhance public health.

Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the Managing Director of LAWMA, stated that the affected shops would remain sealed until they complied with sanitation requirements. He emphasized that the goal of the operation was to encourage compliance with environmental laws rather than to punish business owners.

The operation specifically covered Modele Street, Fagbile Street, and Maja Street, where violations had persisted despite prior warnings.
