Nigerian Lawmakers Decry North-West Economic Decline, Call for Coordinated Development Efforts

Lawmakers, including Senate Deputy President Barau Jibrin and Senate Committee Chairman on North West Development Commission Babangida Hussaini, highlighted the economic challenges facing Nigeria's North-West region at a summit in Kaduna. They emphasized the need for coordinated economic rescue efforts to address issues such as insecurity, infrastructure deficits, youth unemployment, and climate stress.

Despite being a key agricultural hub, the region faces poverty and underdevelopment due to fragmented development initiatives. The establishment of the North West Development Commission aims to reset the region's development priorities, focusing on security, infrastructure, agriculture, and human capital development.

Former Vice President Namadi Sambo urged urgent action to address the region's economic woes, citing past failures in infrastructure projects as examples of poor coordination hindering progress.
