Nigerian Senate Order Paper: Key Bills & Motions, May 5 2026
The Nigerian Senate sat on Tuesday, 5th May 2026 with a packed agenda that included three new bills introduced for first reading, two bills brought forward for concurrence from the House of Representatives, and a motion calling for the revival of Nigeria's collapsed textile industry. Senators also considered committee reports on a law reform appointment and an amendment to the Federal Medical Centre Act.
Three bills were introduced for first reading on May 5, 2026. The Factoring, Assignments and Receivables Financing Bill, 2026 (HB. 516) deals with how businesses can raise money using their receivables and contracts. Two health-related bills — the Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians (Registration, etc.) Act (Amendment) Bill, 2026 and the Dental Therapists (Registration, etc.) Act (Amendment) Bill, 2026 — were also introduced, targeting the regulation of eye care and dental therapy professionals in Nigeria. All three were sponsored by Senate Leader Sen. Michael Opeyemi Bamidele.
The Senate also considered a report from the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters on the nomination of Prof. Francis Ifeanyi Asogwah as a Commissioner of the Nigerian Law Reform Commission, as well as a committee report on the Federal Medical Centre Act (Amendment) Bill, 2026.
Two House of Representatives bills — the Federal Polytechnics Act (Amendment) Bill and the Chartered Institute of Public Management of Nigeria Bill — were listed for Senate concurrence.
A notable motion sponsored by Sen. Sunday Marshall Katung (Kaduna South) called on the Federal Government to revive Nigeria's textile industry, noting that over 7,000 jobs were lost when major Kaduna mills shut down by 2007 and that Nigeria now imports over 99 percent of its textile needs.
