Cross River Government to Demolish Houses in Calabar

The Cross River government, led by Governor Bassey Otu, has announced plans to demolish houses in Calabar situated within the Water Board area, including properties owned by Alphonsus Eba, the immediate past state chairman of the APC and deputy governorship candidate of the PDP. The government issued a demolition notice to owners of buildings earmarked for demolition, stating that the exercise is essential for rehabilitating water infrastructure and restoring regular public water supply to the area.

Barr. Ekpenyong Akiba, the governor's special adviser on general duties, clarified that the demolitions are part of a World Bank project aimed at improving water supply and are not targeted at individuals.

He emphasized that the list of structures to be demolished includes properties owned by public servants, retirees, and private citizens, asserting that the action prioritizes public interest over political affiliations. The government has faced criticism but maintains that the rehabilitation of water facilities is necessary for the community's benefit.
