Nigeria's Fish Production Fails to Meet National Demand

The Sea Empowerment & Research Centre (SEREC) has reported that Nigeria's local fish production is falling short of national demand, leading to a significant supply deficit that is primarily filled by imports. This information was detailed in SEREC's special mid-year maritime security and blue economy bulletin, signed by Head of Research Eugene Nweke.

Despite ongoing investments from the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, the production gap poses a food security challenge and represents a missed economic opportunity. SEREC identified several constraints affecting sector growth, including high feed costs, limited access to financing, inadequate cold-chain infrastructure, post-harvest losses, illegal fishing, and climate-related pressures.

The organization recommends increased investment in commercial aquaculture, fish hatcheries, processing facilities, and stronger enforcement against illegal fishing. SEREC emphasizes that a robust fisheries industry is crucial for Nigeria's Blue Economy aspirations and should be prioritized in the nation's economic diversification strategy.
