Madagascar Launches Voter Registry Overhaul for Elections

Madagascar has commenced a voter registry overhaul as a crucial step in preparation for upcoming elections. This process is set to begin nationwide next month and has already attracted significant public scrutiny.

The overhaul comes in the wake of controversies surrounding the electoral body, despite the recent replacement of several members of the National Independent Electoral Commission (CENI). The political landscape in Madagascar has been tumultuous, particularly after the ousting of President Andry Rajoelina, which was followed by deadly youth-led protests.

Colonel Michael Randrianirina assumed power during this period of upheaval and has rejected accusations of a coup, asserting that his rise to power is legitimate according to the constitutional court. He has promised a two-year political transition roadmap, which is expected to be unveiled in February.
