Makarfi Urges Tinubu to Declare State of Emergency on Insecurity

Ahmed Makarfi, the former Governor of Kaduna State and ex-chairman of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), has called on President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in Nigeria due to the worsening security situation. Speaking during an interaction with journalists in Kaduna, Makarfi warned that Nigeria has reached a critical point where stakeholders must confront the growing security challenges.

He criticized the government's recent move to deregister political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections, stating that such actions undermine democracy. Makarfi emphasized that insecurity is the foremost priority for the nation, directly impacting economic growth and social stability.

He noted that Nigeria's unbroken democratic journey since 1999 is significant, but the inability to contain insecurity continues to undermine governance and development. Makarfi urged leaders to focus on practical solutions rather than political criticism, stressing that insecurity cannot be addressed without a massive, coordinated effort involving federal, state, and local governments.
