Bruno Fernandes Named FWA Footballer of the Year

Bruno Fernandes, the captain of Manchester United, has been named the Football Writers' Association (FWA) Footballer of the Year for the 2022-2023 season, as reported by BBC Sport on Friday. The Portuguese midfielder was recognized for his consistent creativity and leadership throughout the campaign, delivering an impressive tally of eight goals and 20 assists in 34 appearances across all competitions.

His central role was pivotal in Manchester United's improved form under interim manager Michael Carrick, contributing significantly to the team's push for a strong league finish and qualification for the next season's UEFA Champions League. Fernandes becomes the first Manchester United player to win this award since Wayne Rooney in 2010.

He joined Manchester United from Sporting CP in January 2020 for £67.7 million and recently reached the milestone of 300 appearances for the club, solidifying his status as an important player. Despite earlier speculation linking him with a move away from Old Trafford, including interest from Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal, Fernandes has chosen to remain with the team, with his current contract running until 2027, including an additional year option.
