NNPC Pipeline Explosion in Rivers Causes Injuries and Damage
A gas pipeline explosion occurred in Aleto, Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State shortly after 2pm, reportedly involving a pipeline belonging to the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.). Residents reported several injuries as they fled the scene, with victims taken to hospitals for emergency treatment.
The fire continued to rage at the time of reporting, but no fatalities had been confirmed. Dr Fyneface Dumnamene Fyneface, Executive Director of the Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC-Nigeria), confirmed the incident and stated that volunteers were deployed to assist with rescue efforts and verify the situation.
Preliminary reports suggested the explosion was due to equipment failure at the NNPC Ltd. facility. YEAC-Nigeria urged the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) to conduct a Joint Investigation Visit (JIV) to determine the cause of the incident.
The Rivers State Police Command and NSCDC were contacted for updates but had not provided information at the time of reporting.
