Sokoto Stakeholders Advocate for Peace and Responsible Journalism

On September 21, stakeholders in Sokoto State convened at Pinnacle Castle Hotel for a one-day event organized by International Alert Nigeria to commemorate the 2026 International Day of Peace. The event, supported by the European Union, Action Against Hunger, and other partners, focused on the theme “Invest in Peace: For Everyone, Everywhere, Every Day.” Haliru Binji, representing the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, highlighted the importance of peace for societal existence and development, noting the diverse backgrounds of participants as a testament to peaceful coexistence.

He urged residents to prioritize peace in all aspects of life, citing insecurity, including kidnapping and banditry, as significant threats. The District Head of Gagi called for mutual respect among Nigerians, emphasizing the constitutional rights of citizens.

Usman Binji, Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, urged journalists to adhere to ethical standards in political reporting, especially with the upcoming 2027 general elections.
