150 Journalists Trained on Conflict Reporting in Sokoto

International Alert, in collaboration with the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID), conducted a two-day Conflict Sensitivity Training for approximately 150 journalists and media practitioners in Sokoto State. This initiative is part of the Resilience, Engagement, and Conflict-Prevention for At-Risk Populations’ Protection in Sokoto State (RECAP Project), funded by the European Union.

The training aims to equip participants, including reporters, editors, and digital content creators, with skills to report conflicts accurately and avoid spreading unverified information. Remikat Blessing Ayuba, a coordinator of the RECAP Consortium, stated that the training addresses findings from a recent Peace and Conflict Analysis, which identified unemployment and poverty as major conflict drivers in Sokoto.

The curriculum includes topics such as conflict-sensitive journalism, disinformation management, and the safety of journalists. Organizers plan to launch a Community of Practice for ongoing collaboration and produce a conflict-sensitive reporting manual in English and Hausa.
