Meta and TikTok Enhance Fact-Checking Amid Migrant Crisis

On Tuesday, the European Union announced that Meta and TikTok had agreed to implement voluntary measures to enhance fact-checking of harmful disinformation associated with the recent influx of 72,000 migrants from Morocco into Ceuta, Spain. This surge was exacerbated by false rumors circulating online, including claims that "the Ceuta border is open." The European Commission has increased coordination with both platforms and Europol, establishing a mechanism to improve collaboration with local fact-checkers.

Balazs Ujvari, a spokesman for the Commission, stated that the platforms activated their crisis protocols and agreed to an ad-hoc escalation and cooperation mechanism. This initiative, launched voluntarily under the Digital Services Act, aims to provide platforms with better information from fact-checkers regarding potential mass border crossings.

The EU held discussions with Meta and TikTok on the preceding Friday and Monday, and both companies confirmed their commitment to monitoring the situation and removing content that violates their policies.
