Methodist Church Calls for Action on Insecurity in Nigeria

The Methodist Church Nigeria, during its 50th/15th Biennial Conference held in Ibadan, Oyo State, from August 2 to 9, 2023, reaffirmed its commitment to speaking truth to the government regarding pressing national issues. Prelate Dr. Oliver Ali-Aba stated that the church would not shy away from its prophetic role, even if it provokes reactions from authorities.

The church urged the federal government to take decisive action against worsening insecurity, economic hardship, unemployment, corruption, and declining living standards. It supported the establishment of State Police as essential for comprehensive security reform.

The conference reflected on Nigeria's challenges, emphasizing faith, righteousness, and collective action as pathways to overcoming difficulties. The church expressed deep concern over economic hardships and identified corruption and mismanagement of resources as major barriers to development.

Despite increased government revenues, improvements in citizens' welfare remain elusive, highlighting the need for stronger accountability and leadership focused on citizen welfare.
