Military Repels ISWAP Attack, Kills 20 Insurgents in Yobe

On March 9-10, 2026, the military, under the Joint Task Force North East, successfully repelled a coordinated attack by the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in Yobe State. The assault targeted troop positions in the Goniri sector.

Sani Uba reported that the terrorists attempted to encircle the military location but were detected through surveillance assets. Troops responded swiftly with superior firepower and defensive maneuvers, supported by air components that provided close air support.

The intense firefight resulted in the neutralization of 20 insurgents, including senior commander Abu Yusu Munzir Dursula. The military recovered several weapons and equipment abandoned by the fleeing insurgents.

Following the engagement, clearance operations were conducted in the Gwaigomari area, where additional bodies of terrorists were discovered. Soldiers sustained injuries during the encounter but were evacuated for medical treatment and are in stable condition.

The military remains committed to defeating insurgency and restoring peace in the northeast.
