Mining Threatens Tourism at Plateau State's Shere Hills

Mining and quarrying activities are endangering key tourist sites in Plateau State, particularly Shere Hills in Jos North Local Government Area. Danjuma Izang, who leads groups of tourists and students to the hills, lamented the transformation from a serene environment to one dominated by the noise of heavy machinery.

He warned that the natural heritage attracting visitors is being destroyed. Hon. Joyce Ramnap, the State Commissioner for Information and Tourism, confirmed the destruction during a government tour, noting that the level of excavation at Shere Hills suggests inadequate approval for such activities.

She expressed the government's intention to protect the site. Local residents, including trader Ladi Pam, reported a decline in business due to reduced tourist visits, while Elder Christopher Davou highlighted the cultural significance of the area's iconic rocks.

The ongoing mining threatens not only the environment but also the economic viability of tourism in the region.
