Analysts Warn Misused Security Terms Fuel Discrimination

Analysts have expressed concern that the misuse and decontextualization of security terminology in social discourse contribute to fear and discrimination, which can harm societal cohesion. In a joint statement issued by Beacon Security Intelligence Ltd and the Whiteink Institute during a conference in Abuja, they emphasized that careless use of general terms in security discussions shapes public perception and policy responses.

The analysts highlighted that such terminology can lead to real-world harm, reinforcing stereotypes and inciting fear. They called for a shift from reactive security approaches to more compassionate community-focused strategies.

The statement also noted that current labeling methods in public security discourse often stem from flawed narratives that associate certain cultural identities with threats, raising human rights concerns. The analysts urged for context-driven definitions and responsible language to reduce profiling and enhance public confidence in security outcomes, addressing growing concerns among security experts and civil society groups regarding ethnic profiling and mistrust between communities and security agencies.
