Ogun Assembly Becomes One-Party System After Defections

The Ogun State Assembly has transitioned to a one-party system as six members defected from the People's Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), leaving the PDP with only eight representatives in the assembly. This significant shift occurred following a legal battle concerning Babajid Owodunni, who resigned from the PDP and withdrew his candidacy, leading to a court appeal that upheld his status.

The defectors, including Lukman Adeley and others, cited internal crises within the PDP, particularly the leadership divide involving factions led by Nyesom Wike and Kabiru Turaki, as reasons for their departure. The APC now holds full control of the assembly, with reactions from party officials highlighting the perceived betrayal of the PDP's principles.

The move has been described as opportunistic by PDP representatives, who argue that the defectors should vacate their seats and seek fresh mandates under the APC.
