200 Gunmen Attack Yelwata Community, 200 Dead

On June 13, 2025, Yelwata community in Guma Local Government Area, Benue State, was invaded by 200 armed men, reportedly leaving 200 people dead and causing property damage worth millions of naira. The Nigerian Police Force, represented by an intelligence response team leader, provided testimony during the trial of nine suspects charged in connection with the attack, which was allegedly sponsored by a disgruntled Fulani chief.

In a separate political development, the Nigerian Senate rejected a proposal to amend the Electoral Act despite significant pressure from opposition parties, including the African Democratic Congress and the New Nigeria Peoples Party, who described the existing law as anti-democratic. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced a shift in the schedule for the 2027 general elections, moving the presidential and national assembly elections to January 2027 and the governorship and state house assembly elections to February 2027.
