Tinubu's Government Launches CNG Initiative for Cheaper Transport

The Federal Government of Nigeria is preparing to implement reductions in transportation costs effective October 1, as part of the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) initiative. Following a meeting with the 36 state governors on August 27, President Bola Tinubu announced the formation of an implementation committee for the National Affordable CNG Transit Programme, chaired by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.

Various states are adopting different strategies, with some already providing subsidized transport services. However, commercial operators are facing challenges such as inadequate refueling infrastructure, high conversion costs, and long queues at existing CNG stations.

President Tinubu has called on states to collaborate with transport unions and commercial operators to support vehicle conversion and fleet deployment, ensuring that savings from cheaper energy are passed on to commuters through reduced fares. The Presidency reported that over 120,000 vehicles have been converted, with more than 400 certified conversion centers and over 90 CNG refueling stations established across the country.
