Moroccans Set to Vote in Parliamentary Elections on Sept 23

Moroccans are set to vote for a new parliament on September 23, with candidate nominations opening on August 31. The Interior Ministry reported that by the afternoon of the first day, 702 candidate lists from 27 political parties had been submitted.

Approximately 15.8 million voters are registered in Morocco, which has a population of 36.8 million according to the 2024 census. The voting-age population is estimated at around 25 million, as per the High Commission for Planning (HCP).

The political contest is intensifying as parties finalize their candidates and strategies for the elections, which will determine the composition of the House of Representatives, the lower house of parliament. The party that secures the most votes will have the strongest claim to lead the formation of the next government.

Currently, the governing coalition consists of the National Rally of Independents (RNI), the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), and the Istiqlal Party, all of which are competing for votes while being government partners.
