Morocco Overtakes Nigeria in $2B Spice Market; Saffron Cultivation Holds Promise for Nigerian Agriculture

Morocco has overtaken Nigeria in the $2 billion spice market, particularly in saffron production, positioning itself as the fourth-largest saffron producer globally. Despite Nigeria's potential in saffron cultivation due to similar climate conditions, challenges such as low awareness, poor local demand, and a lack of technical skills have impeded its progress.

Experts believe that unlocking saffron cultivation could usher in a new era for Nigeria's agriculture sector, given the spice's high market value and proven health benefits. Farmers in Kaduna and Plateau State have begun experimenting with saffron cultivation, albeit on a limited scale, importing seeds from Spain.
