Nigeria's NPC Launches Digital Birth and Death Registration

The National Population Commission (NPC) reported that Nigeria records approximately five million births each year, yet the majority of deaths remain undocumented. Clifford Zira, a Federal Commissioner of the NPC, stated this at an event in Yola, revealing that birth registration coverage is currently about 57% nationwide, while death documentation is below 20%.

This inadequate registration necessitates ongoing efforts by relevant authorities to improve the situation. To address these issues, the NPC has launched a digital registration initiative for both births and deaths in Adamawa State under the Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (E-CRVS) system.

This initiative aims to enhance civil registration and improve statistical data for public policy and resource allocation. The digital registration system became operational across all 21 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Adamawa State at the beginning of the month.

Additionally, the NPC has established 4,011 functional registration centers across Nigeria's 774 LGAs to help bridge the registration gap.
