MRA Seeks NBC Clarification on Broadcast Advisory

The Media Rights Agenda (MRA), led by Executive Director Mr. Edetaen Ojo, has sought clarification from the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) concerning its advisory issued on April 17, 2026, aimed at broadcasters.

The MRA expressed concerns over vague and undefined terms in the NBC's statement, which they argue could lead to misinterpretation and arbitrary application, potentially infringing on freedom of expression and media independence. Mr.

Ojo highlighted the need for accuracy and balance in broadcast content, especially during the critical electoral period. He pointed out that while the NBC's emphasis on professional standards is important, blanket restrictions on expressing opinions could undermine legitimate journalism.

The MRA called for the NBC to refine ambiguous provisions to prevent arbitrary interpretations that could suppress public debate and dissenting views. As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections, the MRA stressed the importance of maintaining credible and independent media to uphold democratic accountability.
