MSC Surpasses 7.2 Million TEU, Leads Global Shipping

Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has crossed the historic threshold of 7.2 million TEU in total containership capacity, reinforcing its status as the world's largest container carrier with a commanding 21.4% share of the global container fleet. As of now, MSC operates 980 vessels and is approaching the milestone of 1,000 ships, with 727 vessels having a combined capacity of 4.55 million TEU owned outright and 253 ships totaling 2.65 million TEU chartered.

MSC's order book stands at 2.18 million TEU, indicating substantial growth potential. This achievement follows MSC's ascent in January 2022 when it overtook Danish rival Maersk, which previously held the top position for decades.

Maersk's fleet capacity at that time was 4,284,728 TEU, with a market share of approximately 17%. MSC's aggressive expansion strategy contrasts with Maersk's focus on asset control and integrated logistics services.

The rise of MSC is set against the backdrop of significant changes in global shipping dynamics, driven by the COVID-19 pandemic and increased demand for consumer goods.
