MSF Raises Alarm Over Surge in Diphtheria Cases in Northern Nigeria

MSF has expressed alarm over the rising cases of diphtheria in Borno, Kano, Bauchi, and other Northern states, with hundreds of suspected cases identified in recent months. The highly contagious disease poses a significant threat, with a mortality rate of up to 50% if left untreated.

MSF is collaborating with state health ministries to scale up emergency responses, including providing treatment at designated centers like ATBUTH. Challenges such as low vaccination coverage and limited access to antitoxin are hindering effective responses to the outbreak.
