Chimamanda Adichie Reflects on Loss and Nigeria's Impact

Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie revealed in an interview with The New York Times that her feelings toward Nigeria have changed significantly after the loss of her 21-month-old son, Nkanu, who died in December 2025 due to a medical emergency at Euracare in Nigeria. Adichie recalled a doctor’s alarming statement regarding her son’s treatment, alleging medical negligence.

She stated bluntly, “I do not want to go back to Nigeria,” indicating that her children might be the only reason she would consider returning, as her daughter still views Nigeria as her “happy place.” Before her son’s death, Adichie felt a deep connection to Nigeria, which she described as integral to her identity and writing. However, the grief from losing her son has altered that connection, leading her to express disbelief over the tragedy and the surreal nature of her experience.
