Cyclospora Outbreak Affects 145 Americans Across 17 States

As of mid-June 2026, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed 145 cases of cyclosporiasis caused by the Cyclospora parasite across 17 states in the United States. The outbreak, which coincides with the official season from May 1 to August 31, has led to intense illness characterized by severe stomach distress, including persistent diarrhea, abdominal cramping, nausea, and unintended weight loss.

New York has reported the highest number of cases, ranging from 31 to 80, followed by Texas and Illinois, each with 11 to 30 cases. While some cases may resolve without treatment, many require antibiotics, and 20 individuals have needed hospitalization.

The CDC, in collaboration with the FDA and state health departments, is tracking infection clusters but has yet to identify a common food source. The outbreak underscores vulnerabilities in food safety systems in the U.S., leaving consumers exposed to potential health risks.
