CDC Links Taco Bell Lettuce to Diarrhea Outbreak

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported a diarrhea-causing parasite outbreak linked to shredded iceberg lettuce supplied to Taco Bell, affecting five states: Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia. As of the latest update, 1,644 people have been confirmed infected with cyclosporiasis, resulting in 94 hospitalizations, but no deaths have been reported.

The CDC has not disclosed the name of the supplier, but the Washington Post cited unnamed sources indicating that Taylor Farms is involved. Federal officials have warned against consuming shredded iceberg lettuce from Taco Bell, prompting the company to take immediate action by voluntarily removing the potentially contaminated lettuce from its supply chain.

Taco Bell stated that it believes in sharing public health responsibility and will replace the affected ingredients within 24 hours. The FDA has advised individuals to thoroughly wash produce or cook it to a temperature of 158°F (70°C) to kill the parasite.
