On April 11, 2025, a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) airstrike targeting suspected Boko Haram insurgents at Jilli Market in Gubio Local Government Area, Borno State, resulted in the deaths of over 200 civilians, primarily traders. Eyewitness Umar Bomai reported that the airstrike occurred during a busy trading period, leading to chaos as people attempted to flee. Local officials, including Futchimiram Ward Councillor Malam Lawan Zanna, confirmed the death toll, stating that the number could exceed 200 as bodies continued to be discovered. The Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) described the incident as an accident and confirmed that many victims were traders from Geidam Local Government Area. Following the incident, NAF announced an investigation into the civilian casualties, emphasizing their commitment to addressing any harm caused to civilians.
