NAFDAC Leads African Food Safety Initiative in Cairo
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), represented by Prof. Mojisola Christianah Adeyeye and a five-member Nigerian delegation, attended the Third African Food Regulatory Authorities Forum (AFRAF) in Cairo, Egypt, from September 30 to October 2, 2026. The forum, organized by the Global Food Regulatory Science Society in collaboration with Egypt’s National Food Safety Authority and other regional bodies, aimed to strengthen continental cooperation on food safety, regulatory harmonization, and safe intra-African trade.
The discussions centered on various topics, including regional sanitary and phytosanitary coordination, risk-based regulation, and food innovation. Adeyeye emphasized the need for collaborative efforts among regulators to address challenges such as food fraud and climate-related risks.
NAFDAC also showcased Nigeria's evolving food safety regulation approach, highlighting a shift towards risk-based regulation and preventive measures through Good Hygiene Practice, Good Manufacturing Practice, and Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP).
