NAFDAC Enforces Ban on Sachet Alcohol, Orders Recall

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has initiated full enforcement of the Federal Government's ban on alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and PET/plastic bottles below 200 millilitres. This decision, announced by NAFDAC Director-General Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, follows the expiration of transition periods agreed upon with manufacturers and industry stakeholders.

The prohibition, which originated from concerns in 2018 regarding high-alcohol-content beverages in small packages, initially allowed a five-year moratorium for manufacturers to adjust their production lines. This deadline was later extended to December 31, 2025, with the ban taking effect from January 1, 2026.

Manufacturers are now required to recall banned products and submit compliance reports to NAFDAC. Non-compliance may lead to shutdowns and license revocations.

Recalled products will be destroyed under NAFDAC supervision, and affected facilities must undergo regulatory verification before resuming operations.
