NAFDAC Enforces Ban on Sachet Alcohol in Nigeria

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has intensified enforcement of the federal government's ban on alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and PET/plastic bottles below 200ml. This enforcement targets manufacturers, distributors, and retailers, warning them to comply or face severe sanctions.

The initiative aims to eliminate prohibited alcoholic products from the Nigerian market and reduce access to highly concentrated alcoholic drinks among children and young people. This action follows an Irrevocable Enforcement Undertaking signed by the Distillers and Blenders Association of Nigeria (DIBAN) and the Association of Food, Beverage and Tobacco Employers (AFBTE), requiring manufacturers to recall such products.

The ban, which has roots dating back to 2018, will see a full prohibition effective from January 1, 2026. NAFDAC's policy is supported by research indicating significant accessibility of these products to minors, with a notable percentage of underage individuals obtaining alcohol in sachets and small bottles.
