NAFDAC's Sachet Alcohol Ban Aimed at Protecting Youth

Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, the Director General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), defended the agency's recent ban on the sale of alcohol in sachets and small PET bottles, stating that unchecked consumption is harming Nigerian youth and contributing to banditry. In an interview on Channels Television, Adeyeye revealed that NAFDAC had shut down three major manufacturing companies for three weeks and arrested several individuals as part of enforcing the ban.

She expressed surprise at the backlash from certain groups, emphasizing that the restriction on alcoholic drinks in containers below 200ml is essential for public health. Adeyeye noted that the initial approval of sachet alcohol decades ago led to severe societal consequences, describing it as a "monster" that threatens the future of Nigeria's workforce and children.

She criticized recent protests in Ibadan against the ban, arguing that demonstrators were focusing on immediate concerns rather than long-term health and national security.
