NAFDAC DG Prof. Adeyeye Defends Tenure Amid Criticism

Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, the Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), defended her nine-year tenure amid calls for her resignation. During a press engagement on Monday, she stated that after spending 34 years in the United States, including 30 years as a professor, she returned to Nigeria to contribute to the country's development.

Adeyeye expressed concern over the prevailing mindset among public officials and citizens, which she believes has led to the deterioration of Nigeria's institutions. She challenged anyone accusing her of demanding bribes from contractors to provide evidence.

Adeyeye highlighted the significant challenges she faced upon assuming office, including NAFDAC inheriting N3.2 billion in liabilities and the poor condition of laboratory equipment. She noted that by November 2018, approximately N3.1 billion had been paid to address these liabilities.

Under her leadership, NAFDAC has improved its international regulatory standing, moving from maturity level one to maturity level three.
