Nairobi to Host 2029 World Athletics Championships

On September 15, Nairobi was awarded the rights to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships, marking a historic first for Africa as it prepares to stage the senior global championships. This decision is significant for Kenya, which has a rich history of producing Olympic and world champions but has never previously hosted the senior World Athletics Championships.

The bid was bolstered by the high level of interest in athletics among Kenyans, with 68 percent of the population expressing interest in the sport, compared to a global average of 38 percent. This makes Kenya the most engaged market for athletics worldwide, showcasing the strong public support for the sport.

The event will bring leading track and field athletes to Africa, reflecting both Kenya's athletics pedigree and its enthusiasm for the sport.
