NANS Condemns Insecurity After Students Escape Kidnap

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), through its Joint Campus Council (JCC) in Lagos, expressed deep concern regarding the escalating insecurity on Nigeria's federal highways after a group of student leaders narrowly escaped a kidnapping incident. The delegation was en route to a zonal convention at Ekiti State University when they faced an ambush near Ilesa on February 13, 2026.

Their journey was delayed due to a mechanical issue, leading them to unknowingly drive into a coordinated attack by armed assailants. The driver displayed extraordinary courage by reversing the vehicle to escape the attackers.

NANS noted the absence of security personnel during the two-hour incident, which reflects a broader trend of unchecked highway crime, including kidnappings and armed robberies. They criticized the failure of the Inspector General of Police to ensure safety on federal highways and called for urgent measures to restore security, emphasizing that Nigerian students should not travel in fear.
