NANS Protests Over Kidnapped Oyo Students and Teachers

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), led by President Akintey Babatunde, has mobilized for a nationwide protest following the kidnapping of 39 students and seven teachers from various schools in Oriire Local Government Area, Oyo State. The protest is scheduled for Monday, June 1, 2026, and aims to address the prolonged captivity of the victims, which has been described as unacceptable.

Babatunde emphasized that Nigerian students can no longer remain silent about the plight of innocent pupils and teachers held by kidnappers. The protest will include visits to affected schools, such as Grammar School Ahoro Esiel and Yawota Baptist Nursery and Primary School, and will involve a peaceful walk against insecurity in Ibadan, the state capital.

The movement seeks to pressure relevant security agencies to intensify efforts for the immediate rescue of the abducted individuals. The incident, which occurred during a gunmen attack, resulted in the death of teacher Michael Oyedokun and the abduction of a two-year-old child, Christianah Akanbi.
