NANS Launches Committees to Oversee Education Projects

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has established four investigative committees aimed at assessing and monitoring educational intervention projects across tertiary institutions in Nigeria. This initiative comes amid growing concerns regarding abandoned infrastructure, poor project execution, and unpaid student stipends.

The announcement was made in Abuja, with a focus on major intervention agencies including the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), and Industrial Training Fund (ITF). NANS President Babatunde Akintey stated that the committees are tasked with strengthening accountability and ensuring that public funds allocated for education translate into visible improvements in campus infrastructure nationwide.

Despite billions of naira being disbursed annually for educational interventions, institutions continue to struggle with inadequate classrooms and deteriorating hostels. The committees will investigate the quality of project supervision and assess whether allocated funds are being utilized properly, while also addressing persistent complaints from students regarding unpaid stipends for the Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES).
