NASU and SSANU Launch Nationwide Strike Over Allowances

The Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) have confirmed the commencement of a nationwide strike effective from midnight on May 1, 2026. This decision follows a letter dated April 30, 2026, addressed to Tunji Alausa, where the unions expressed dissatisfaction with the federal government's failure to finalize ongoing negotiations regarding workers' allowances.

NASU's General Secretary, Peter Adeyemi, and SSANU's President, Moham Ibrahim, stated that despite the government's withdrawal of a contentious circular proposing a 30% increase in consolidated non-teaching staff allowances, the core issues of the dispute remain unresolved. The unions highlighted the slow pace of the renegotiation process and noted that the federal government has yet to present an alternative proposal to replace the withdrawn allowance package.
