Nigerian National Assembly Resumes Plenary on September 29

The Nigerian National Assembly resumed plenary on Tuesday, September 29, following an extension of its annual recess, which was initially scheduled to conclude earlier in the month. The Senate and House of Representatives are set to focus on pending legislative business, including constitutional amendments, electoral reforms, and oversight of the implementation of the 2026 national budget.

The constitutional amendment process remains a significant issue, with proposed amendments transmitted to the 36 State Houses of Assembly for consideration. These reforms address state police, local government administration, electoral matters, and other institutional reforms.

As preparations for the 2027 general elections intensify, lawmakers are expected to consider outstanding electoral reforms and measures affecting the electoral process. The leadership of both chambers is anticipated to outline legislative priorities as plenary commences.

Additionally, lawmakers will face inquiries regarding the implementation of the 2026 budget, constituency projects, and other national interests. The recess was extended to complete rehabilitation work in the legislative chambers.
