Igbo Group Calls for End to Sharia Law in Nigeria

The Ndi Igbo Worldwide Union, a pan-Igbo socio-political organization, has issued a statement demanding an end to Sharia law in Nigeria, emphasizing that its coexistence with common law raises serious concerns about national unity and equal treatment under the law. The statement, signed by President Benjamin Nwankwo and Secretary Charl Edemuzo, was released on a Friday and highlights the need for clarity in Nigeria's legal structure to promote fairness and cohesion.

The group warns that the failure to resolve these legal ambiguities could deepen divisions and undermine public confidence in the justice system. They advocate for constitutional amendments to ensure legal uniformity and strengthen national unity, while respecting Nigeria's diverse religious and cultural identities.

The statement also notes that since 1999, several northern states have expanded Sharia law to cover criminal matters, which has generated controversy regarding its compatibility with constitutional guarantees of human rights and equal treatment.
